2020 Gypsy Meltdown Cancelled.
After much anguish, we have reached a decision to cancel Gypsy Meltdown 2020. The health and safety of our dance community and our community at large makes this the right choice.
Monday, March 30 – This week should see the mass Eventbrite cancellation and refund process begin. Carol Deacon will begin the refund process for those who registered via paper.
If anyone would like to donate some portion of their refund he/she can mail a check payable to Charlotte Country Dancers to:
918 Blakeley Walk, Rock Hill SC 29732
By the end of April we will take all donations and distribute them to our bands/callers/sound folks.
Refund questions can be sent to Carol Deacon at firstname.lastname@example.org
Please stay tuned for further news. Please be well and be safe.
2020 Gypsy Meltdown – April 3rd, 4th and 5th, 2020
The Roaring ’20s
Bands: Elixir and The Dam Beavers along with Playing with Fyre
Callers: Nils Fredland and Seth Tepfer
Gypsy Meltdown is Charlotte’s annual contra dance weekend, held each year at Camp Thunderbird. Come enjoy three superb days of dancing to some of the best bands and callers in the country.
The Big Bands
Elixir – To capture the magic of the jazz age, Elixir (Anna Patton, Ethan Hazzard, Jesse Readlynn, Owen Morrison and Nils Fredland) blends driving fiddle and guitar with the rich texture and rhythmic excitement of a full horn section, deftly weaving brassy riffs and daring solos in and out of traditional Irish, French Canadian and New England tunes.
The Dam Beavers – For added swing there will be The Dam Beavers, a wonderful contra dance band featuring Ben Schreiber on fiddle and Scotty Leach on piano. A good time will be had by all!
And, as a special attraction, Playing with Fyre (George Paul & Rob Zisette) will join us to play Waltz, English Country and Late Night Blues as well!
The callers will be Nils Fredland – whose mother swears that, as a child, she once glimpsed Zelda Fitzgerald riding atop a taxi cab – and Seth Tepfer, whose grandfather met F. Scott at New York party and shared drinks and a conversation with him (though he doesn’t remember the drinks served or the topics discussed).
The Saturday Night Great Gatsby Gala
The height of Roaring 20’s weekend will once again be the Saturday Night Great Gatsby Gala. The cops have been paid off and everything is on the up and up. Bring your best dame or best guy and have a blast. We encourage evening dress (white or otherwise) and gangster/playboy attire. Couples wishing to stare romantically across Lake Wylie, searching for the ever-distant green light, are invited to do so as discreetly as possible.
